A passionate and deeply personal exploration of feminism during divisive times by actor, filmmaker, and activist Amber Tamblyn

In her late twenties, Amber Tamblyn experienced a crisis of character while trying to break out of the confines of the acting career she'd forged as a child in order to become the writer and director she dreamed of being as an adult. After a particularly low period fueled by rejection and disillusionment, she grabbed hold of her own destiny and entered into what she calls an Era of Ignition--namely, the time of self-reflection that follows in the wake of personal upheaval and leads to a call to action and positive change. In the process of undergoing this metaphysical metamorphosis, she realized that our country was going through an Era of Ignition of its own. She writes "No longer stuck in a past we can't outrun and a future we must outgrow, we are a nation that is actively confronting our values and agitating for change. We are in an age when activism becomes direct action, when disagreement becomes dissention, when dissatisfaction becomes protest, when accusations become accountability, and when revolts become revolutions."

Through her fierce op-eds and tireless work as one of the founders of the Time's Up organization, Amber has emerged as a bold, outspoken, and respected advocate for women's rights. In Era of Ignition, she addresses gender inequality and the judgment paradigm, misogyny and discrimination, trauma and the veiled complexities of consent, white feminism and pay parity, reproductive rights and sexual assault--all told through the very personal lens of her own experiences, as well as those of her Sisters in Solidarity. At once an intimate meditation and public reckoning, Era of Ignition is a galvanizing feminist manifesto that is required reading for everyone attempting to understand the world we live in and help change it for the better.

"Loved this book—Ms. Amber is very genuine and honest in her narration. The book is full of personal examples and some of them had made me cry. There are some thought-provoking comments that will get under your skin (that is, if you’re a female reader) and will stay with you for a long time.

I found a few theoretical discussions rather dry and boring, but there were not many of those.

Finally, the book is also quite short so you can easily read it in one sitting.

    Final Grade A-
  • Amber Tamblyn is minor Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Russ Tamblyn of West Side Story Fame. She became well-known at a strikingly young age as the lead in Joan of Arcadia. I bought the book thinking it might have some interesting back stage stories. Instead, incredibly, I find this Hollywood princess so indulged, so overprivileged that she is .. . . embittered. The world has treated her badly - this awful treatment takes the form of inadequate distribution of the films in which she is involved, and a failure of the US to recognize the virtues of Hillary Clinton to the same fulsome extent she does. (That Ms. Clinton owes every position she ever attained to her marriage, that she did not earn one thing on the merit system, has escaped the attention of the author.) It's an incredible display, and says a great deal about the toxic attitudes of the Hollywood elite towards the rest of the world.
  • I learned so much while reading this book. It was recommended by Meagan McCain when the author was a guest on The View tv show.
  • Actor and director Tamblyn’s memoir dives into the new social awareness on gender inequities through her own perspective. The book is part-memoir and seeks to engage people into the movement through essays where Tamblyn discusses her abusive relationships, her time in Hollywood, and her role as an activist. For those interested in this movement, this book offers insights into the evolving modern feminism and the never ending struggle of injustice.
  • 4.5/5 Stars

Amber Tamblyn's Age of Ignition is one part feminist memoir and one part social justice exposition, specifically dealing with the rise of the #metoo movement and her experience in that context. If you only know Hollywood Amber Tamblyn, you might think her place of undeniable economic and racial privilege might mean this work is yet another for and about white women, but I am here to tell you this book is so much more.

Tamblyn does an excellent job dedicating space and time to intersectional feminist issues for women of color and LGBTQIA women. She is also careful not to speak for marginalized women as much as she wants to make sure white women understand that feminism for non-cis white women has different central issues and must be included in discussions about feminism.

The second half of the book is much stronger than the first in my opinion. In fact my favorite part is an interview she included with Meredith Talusan, who is a non-binary Trans woman and journalist who immigrated to the U.S. from the Phillipines. I found her perspective on feminist issues in the U.S. to be fascinating. I also enjoyed the essay Tamblyn included by Airea D. Matthews, a poet and assistant professor at Brin Mawr College. This essay is a deeper look at the history and importance of feminism for women of color.

Overall, I recommend this work for all people who want to learn more than the news will tell you about the #metoo movement and intersectional feminism. Amber Tamblyn's prose is straightforward and accessible. I also found this book to be an empowering reminder that yes, we women have work to do, but together we can get there, bit by painful bit.

  • So far, I am about 2/3 way through the book, I am enjoying it. Having grown up in the 1960s and early 70's with a liberal feminist Mother myself, I always followed my Mother's interest in Gloria Steinem and others in what I would call "Baby Boomer Feminism." It is refreshing to read this really honest, funny and heartfelt memoir of Amber Tamblyn and get the inside look at the "Me Too" and "Times Up" movements. It was educational for me to get up to speed about the new wave of feminism that my daughter's generation is reinventing and energizing in a whole new way. They are really courageous and passionate. I love Amber's term "angerization" - meaning not just being angry, but turning that anger into a real organization that will make changes in society in a very real way.
