"I just got this but know from the author and a quick glance (you can check the contents above) that it provides a comprehensive overview of the dinosaurs - but the bonus on this book are the many illustrations - photos and color drawings, which you don't always get with seriously informative books on prehistoric animals. I look forward to spending a lot of time with it."

- I just got this but know from the author and a quick glance (you can check the contents above) that it provides a comprehensive overview of the dinosaurs - but the bonus on this book are the many illustrations - photos and color drawings, which you don't always get with seriously informative books on prehistoric animals. I look forward to spending a lot of time with it.
- The book was on the shelf, somewhat surprisingly in coffee table size. I found this at my local bookstore and was able to get a price similar to here, so I have had this for a week. The book may be competing for attention at the museum gift shops, so that may be the reason for the size. it is some 240 pages, so one can still hold the book in hand, but I am sitting at a table to read it. The pictures are in fact spectacular. Some are in fact the typical color pictures of feathered dinosaurs, but many are historical pictures. They did not overdo the color this time.
The author takes a good balance of hard facts and some very slight interpretation freedom. But it is written in journalistic style and does not make for dry reading.
It is organized in groups, not in geological time. Each entry can be read on its own and even the first 100 pages has been so easy to read that I did not skip any of it. There is some limited technological jargon, but should be easy enough at high school level.
I think there is a demand for some books like this that take the time to organize the matter for you, so it is not just an unreadable encyclopedia and a chance for illustrators to go crazy.
If this is too unwieldy or you don't buy coffee table books (I made an exception, I do not usually), try "Dinosaurs, How they lived and evolved" by Darren Naish and Paul Barrett for a similar scholarly book.
